Aqua Fresca Recipes
Hibiscus Agua Fresca – makes 1 quart
1/3 C dried hibiscus flowers
1 ½ C Cold Water
1/3 Cup sugar or honey, or to taste
Enough extra cold water to make up to 4 Cups liquid
Procedure:
- Place the flowers and first 1 ½ C water in a large sauce pan and bring to a boil
- Reduce heat and simmer for about 3 minutes
- Add in the sugar and enough water to make 4 cups liquid total, stir to dissolve the sugar
- Allow the mix to sit overnight or at least 4 hours in the fridge
- Strain, adjust sweetness, and enjoy.
Watermelon or Cantaloupe Agua Fresca – makes about a half a gallon
6 C of dice ripe melon (about a quarter of a watermelon or a whole cantaloupe)
4 C cold water
Sugar to taste
Limes to garnish
Procedure:
- Seed and place melon and 2 Cups water into a large blender, puree until smooth
- Add remaining water and blend briefly and adjust sweetness with sugar or honey
- Serve cold, garnished with lemon
Notes: Seedless watermelons are easiest to use. If your watermelons have seeds, remove as many as you can when you dice them and puree the rest. No watermelon will grow in your stomach, I promise
